![]() ![]() About five minutes ago (after this app froze yet again), I transferred my book back into TextEdit, which has proven to be more reliable. But, beyond that, I was disappointed by this software. As an aspiring author, I found the live word count useful for tracking me progress, and it also came in very handy during NaNoWriMo. The one thing I really liked about the software was the live word count. I feel like I have less control over the format of my document, as I can no longer change font, size, or italicize only a certain portion of my text (it has a meltdown whenever I try to italicize something). So, about a month ago, I purchased this app (mostly because of the price). I'd been using TextEdit for the majority of my writing (school and recreational), but I wanted a more proficient document software where I could control the page margins and such (college is very particular about papers being submitted in MLA). It's also, as far as I can see, the best option out there for a simple, relatively straightforward, small-size word processor. You might not need the full anti-ADHD power of a single-window UI for your writing, so WriteRoom works just fine with traditional document windows. This is an application with a lot of great options, but it's somewhere between a coder's application and a writer's word processor, and straddles the line uncomfortably. The full-screen option is seamless and infinitely better than the ones packaged with Pages or TextEdit. Highlighting the current line is wonderful. On the plus side, the option to universally change your background and font colors is wonderful. Changing the font in one document will change the font of all other documents using that theme, meaning you have to create a new theme for every new document. There's an auto-indent "feature," useless and extremely annoying for any non-coding application, that can't be turned off. I just don't like my time being wasted.I was a big fan of this product several years ago, but it seems to be devolving and doing away with much of modern app design. Sorry for the snarky commentary, I'm just frustrated - which I know is a poor excuse. Select word, sentence, and paragraph commands. Shift line up, down, left, and right commands. Unlike the cluttered word processors you're used to, WriteRoom lets you focus on writing. Since it was an inexpensive upgrade, the value wasn't bad, and so far it hasn't crashed on me. WriteRoom is a full screen writing environment. Theming isn't as cut-and-dry - I didn't see a Theme editor, so I opened a theme in the text editor (thinking it might be XML-based) and was greeted with gibberish. After one spends an hour of customizing, and wasting valuable writing time, it almost works like its predecessor. However, I can't adjust the bottom margin in 3), and a entire black background gives me a headache after awhile. Unlike the cluttered word processors you're used to. ![]() Requires Mac OS X 10.7+' and is a popular Word Processor in the office & productivity category. There are more than 50 alternatives to WriteRoom for a variety of platforms, including Windows, Mac, iPhone, Linux and iPad. I liked WriteRoom 2 because of the flexibility it afforded me in customizing my writing environment - it's about allowing me to focus on writing and not minutiae, right? WriteRoom 3 takes a departure, which has caused me to spend around 20 minutes just trying to get the window how I want it - full screen every time I open WriteRoom, the page is centered (I don't like text scrolling off the edge of my monitor, it's distracting. The best alternative is Manuskript, which is both free and Open Source. ![]()
